From Fenny Compton to Napton Lower Lock

It was an absolutely lovely day again today.  I had some editorial stuff to do on the newsletter I am responsible for editing, and so Chris and James set off to get the other car and move one to Napton, our destination for the day. So they moved cars, I edited and Belinda did some boat cleaning.  All very diligent!

We set off at about 11.30am and the first part of the journey is an extremely windy bit of canal, following the contours around all sorts of bends, some very sharp, some much less so.  At one point we got back to the place where there is a bit of HS2 work going on,  There were plenty of workers in evidence, and Tonka toys moving about too.  It's a huge space, and you really wonder what it's all for, and whether any of it is really necessary.  There is a project here to explore the way cement settles with different sorts of reinforcement. The engineers in the crew were a bit sceptical about the whole thing!!

There were all sorts of big machines in view and moving about the site too.   We wondered what the landscape might look like when the project was over?  How much of the canal side would have been destroyed and the wildlife with it too?

After this the landscape went back to it's normal for Warwickshire, with largely sheep fields either side of the canal.  There were some teenage sheep charging about and gambolling!! Is it really only sheep that gambol?  There were other signs of young life too - these were the first brood of goslings we had seen.  The parents looked very proud!

We stopped for lunch and enjoyed our sandwiches and beer on the foredeck of the boat - the first time we had done that this year! By then we were about 2 miles from the first lock.  There are a pair and then a flight of 7.  The canal was quite busy with boats coming up as well as going down.  We passed several boats through the locks which is always very helpful as they leave the lock set right for you to go straight into it. That saves a lot of effort and water too. 

Just after you have done the first two locks you come to this little arm of water leading away from the canal.  In times past it went to the Engine House which was placed there to raise water up to the top level. It was good to see that there was plenty of water about today.

A little bit further on we were rather surprised to see a herd of water buffalo.  They seemed to be rather tamer than the ones  ones we'd come across recently in the Serengeti! The flight of locks passes under a series of bridges which look a nice soft pink among all the green. As you can see, there was a steady stream of boats coming up!

Below is a picture of the bottom lock which then leads onto a long stretch of flat water.  We had booked to go and eat in the Folly Pub where the landlord with the moustache is in charge.  We managed to find a good mooring just around the corner in the view below.  Napton Hill stands very proud above the canal and also the surrounding plain that leads to Rugby and eventually Birmingham.

Dinner at the Folly was a very good example of pub food, with the luxury of a delicious lemon meringue pie and good conversation.  Another very satisfactory day all round!  Off to Braunston tomorrow, and the weather looks set fair again!  Hurrah!
